A trial against a 17-year-old girl on charges of telecom fraud is set to begin soon, according to reports in China.
The girl, identified only as ‘Zhou’, is accused of selling her 19-year-old boyfriend to a telecom fraud sweatshop in Myanmar.
According to reports, Zhou met her boyfriend Huang in 2024.
After they started dating, Zhou started pressuring Huang to visit her family’s business in Myanmar, and that he should join her at the job too.
Huang flew to Bangkok, Thailand with Zhou, planning to cross into Myanmar by road.
After crossing the border, Huang was kidnapped by armed individuals and taken to a telecom fraud compound.
Zhou had allegedly sold her boyfriend to the kidnappers for 100,000 yuan (BD5,259).
Huang was finally freed with the help of the Chinese chamber of commerce in Myanmar.
Zhou was detained by police when she returned to China.
