Satirical black comedy The Roses is out now in theatres.
It follows picture-perfect couple Theo Rose (Benedict Cumberbatch), a successful architect, and Ivy Rose (Olivia Colman), an up-and-coming restaurateur.
When Theo’s career suddenly takes a nosedive and Ivy’s skyrockets, the couple’s façade unravels as rivalry and resentments arise, resulting in a hilarious and dark turn in their relationship.
“The film is a parable of two people who loved each other intensely, then ended up hating each other intensely and missing the middle ground,” Benedict said in an interview.
“Much of it is shockingly recognisable: how we struggle to show love towards the people we love the most, and how this can all go wrong very quickly if we’re not careful about nurturing and nourishing the relationships at the centre of our families,” he added.
Actress Kate McKinnon, who plays the couple’s friend Amy, expressed how she believes the audience would connect to the characters.
“Your heart is breaking because they’re so likable as characters and in real life. And they’re fighting with each other as they’re fighting for each other,” Kate said.
“And it’s just a complicated set of feelings. It’s like you want to watch them go at each other, and then you want them to just hug and make up,” she added.
The film is based on the 1981 novel The War of the Roses by Warren Adler, and a remake of the namesake 1989 film, which was the 13th highest grossing production of that year, and also earned three Golden Globes nominations.
