Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has launched the King Salman Gate project, a major multi-purpose development adjacent to the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the Saudi Press Agency reported yesterday.
Covering 12 million square metres, the project aims to transform the Islamic holy city’s infrastructure and services for pilgrims, in line with Saudi Vision 2030.
The development will include residential, cultural and service facilities, adding capacity for around 900,000 worshippers in indoor and outdoor courtyards.
It will be connected by public transportation to ease access to the Grand Mosque and designed to blend Mecca’s heritage with modern architecture.
The project aims to revitalise 19,000sqm of historical and cultural sites and is expected to create more than 300,000 jobs by 2036.
It is being developed by the RUA AlHaram AlMakki Company, part of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), emphasising sustainability, innovation and preservation of Mecca’s cultural identity.
