A Bahraini fuelled by road rage stuck the boot in when he confronted the driver of the car that had overtaken and suddenly braked in front of him, the High Criminal Court heard.
The furious 27-year-old from Arad accidentally slammed into the back of the man’s car who then pulled over into the emergency lane to check the damage caused.
The victim, a 22-year-old fellow Bahraini, watched in horror as the accused then drove towards him, the court heard.
He was unable to jump clear in time and was left writhing on the ground in severe pain. His ordeal only got worse.
After that, the accused got out of his car and proceeded to allegedly swear and kick him multiple times in the head, back and face.
The victim reportedly begged the defendant to stop his assault but his pleas fell on deaf ears.
A 29-year-old from Hidd, who was on his way to work, witnessed the incident. He, along with other bystanders, contacted the police and the attacker was arrested. He also called for an ambulance, which transported the victim to a nearby hospital for treatment.
He had suffered a broken pelvis and a fracture in the posterior cortex, along with other minor injuries, a medical report revealed.
The authorities later learned that the defendant was in the vehicle with another man, a 28-year-old Sudanese expatriate, and they asked him to recount what happened prior to the incident. He told officers that he was with his friend, the accused, and that the victim had overtaken them and suddenly braked.
He explained that the initial incident was accidental as the accused could not stop the vehicle in time and ended up unintentionally hitting the victim’s car.
The accused then ‘suddenly lost his mind’ and began assaulting the victim in retaliation.
During yesterday’s hearing, where the accused stood before the court for the first time, the judges asked him to explain his behaviour on the day.
He admitted to assaulting the victim and ramming his car into him and his vehicle. However, he denied using foul and abusive language.
The case has been adjourned until December 8 for further deliberation.
