Bahrain called for a broad-based, constructive national dialogue among all Haitian parties, describing it as the most effective path to agreement on steps towards credible, transparent elections, stronger institutions and a return to stable democratic governance.
Bahrain stressed that any political process must be led and owned by Haitians, with international support provided in full respect of Haiti’s sovereignty and independence.
This came in the statement of Bahrain delivered by Counselor Sama Sameer Al Alaiwat on behalf of the kingdom’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, during a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Haiti.
The statement emphasised the importance of Security Council Resolution 2793, adopted in September, which authorised the transition of the Multinational Security Support Mission into an anti-gang force.
Bahrain expressed solidarity with Haiti’s transitional authorities and people, and affirmed its readiness to work with the United Nations and international partners to help Haiti navigate the current challenges and move towards a safer, more stable future.
Bahrain also reiterated its support for Syria’s sovereignty, independence, security and territorial integrity, stressing that the country is at a sensitive juncture that requires co-ordinated international engagement to help conditions for the return of refugees, reconstruction efforts, support economic recovery and the achievement of sustainable development for the Syrian people.
Bahrain expressed full solidarity with the Syrian government, describing Syria’s stability and its reintegration into its Arab and international surroundings as essential to wider regional stability.
The kingdom’s statement said Bahrain is following the positive steps taken by the Syrian government to advance the political reform process, including the convening of the Syrian National Dialogue Conference, as well as the holding of legislative elections last October, as a Syrian-led political track that ensures the full participation of Syrians in shaping the future of their country.
Bahrain expressed its appreciation for the efforts of Saudi in contributing to the lifting of sanctions on Syria.
