Residents of some of the Capital Governorate’s busiest neighbourhoods are seeing continued investment in infrastructure as the government presses ahead with projects aimed at improving roads, drainage and essential services.
The Works Ministry has confirmed that a number of major and smaller-scale projects have either been completed or are progressing in the fourth constituency of the Capital Governorate, which includes the bustling districts of Juffair, Adliya, Ghuraifa, Umm Al Hassam and Abu Ghazal.
The update came in a written response by Works Minister Ibrahim Al Hawaj to a parliamentary question submitted by Dr Hassan Bukhammas, who represents the constituency and chairs Parliament’s foreign affairs, defence and national security committee.
Dr Bukhammas requested details on completed and ongoing infrastructure projects, including budgets, completion timelines and progress rates.
The minister said the ministry remained committed to strengthening Bahrain’s infrastructure network in line with urban expansion and economic development.
Among the major projects completed recently is the construction of a sewage network in Juffair Block 324. The works were completed in July 2025 as part of an integrated infrastructure development scheme covering sewerage and road works in the area.
The total cost of the project reached BD3,470,067.
The minister said developed areas within the fourth constituency have now achieved approximately 99 per cent sewage network coverage.
Across the wider Capital Governorate, sewerage network coverage has reached around 93pc, with the remaining areas to be connected as part of future projects.
“The ministry will continue studying the connection of remaining areas within upcoming contracts and future development plans,” Mr Al Hawaj added.
Several road projects have also been completed to ease congestion and improve safety in the constituency.
One of the most significant was the Juffair roads development project in Block 324, completed and opened to traffic in July 2025.
The BD3.47 million integrated project included – development of internal road networks, construction of stormwater drainage systems, installation of service ducts for future utilities, improved street lighting, pavements and pedestrian facilities as well as traffic signs and safety measures.
Meanwhile, the major Al Fateh Highway development project was completed and opened to traffic in December 2023 at a cost of BD29,662,314.
The works included widening the road to four lanes in each direction, upgrading intersections and constructing several grade-separated structures.
“The project aims to increase road capacity and reduce traffic congestion along one of the Capital’s busiest corridors,” Mr Al Hawaj said.
In addition, an expansion project at the Al Fateh Highway intersection with Mina Salman was completed in July 2025. A new lane was added in each direction, increasing the total number of lanes to three northbound and four southbound.
Several smaller neighbourhood road upgrades have also been completed, particularly in Adliya.
A rehabilitation project covering Roads 2713, 2715 and 2719 in Block 327 included removing damaged asphalt layers and repaving the roads with new asphalt. The project was completed at the end of 2024 at a cost of around BD85,000.
The redesign and upgrade of Roads 3028 and 3831 in Block 338 delivered several key improvements.
The project added more than 50 new parking spaces, installed modern stormwater drainage systems, replaced deteriorated paving blocks, and introduced updated traffic signage. Together, these enhancements were implemented to improve traffic flow, enhance pedestrian and driver safety, and support better overall movement within the neighbourhood.
The project started in July 2025 and was completed later that year at a cost of BD180,983.
Looking ahead, the Works Ministry has included new projects for the constituency in its 2025–2026 budget.
One of them involves extending the turning lane on Shaikh Isa bin Salman Highway near the Umm Al Hassam walkway.
Mr Al Hawaj said detailed designs for the project had already been completed.
“Implementation will commence after obtaining the necessary approvals from the relevant service providers,” he said.
