Four Bahrainis have been arrested, and a fifth suspect is believed to have fled abroad accused of espionage on behalf of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the Interior Ministry announced.
The General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science identified the arrested nationals as Murtadha Hussain Awal, 25, Ahmed Issa Al Haiki, 34, Sarah Abdulnabi Marhoon, 36, and Elias Salman Mirza, 22. Ali Mohammed Hassan Al Sheikh, 25, was named as the fugitive.
Investigations revealed that a high-resolution imaging equipment was used to photograph and record co-ordinates of vital locations in the kingdom. This information was allegedly then transmitted via encrypted software to the Iranians.
The directorate said that the necessary legal procedures were ongoing and the cases had been referred to the Public Prosecution.
