ATHLETICS – Bahrain’s Nelly Jepkosgei clocked her season’s best time in the women’s 1,500 metres last night but could only claim 13th place in a hotly contested race at the Meeting International Mohammed VI d’Athletisme – a Diamond League event held in Rabat, Morocco.
Jepkosgei posted a finishing mark of four minutes 04.57 seconds.
She was well behind race winner Freweyni Hailu, who led an Ethiopian one-two alongside compatriot Haregeweyni Kalayu in 3:58.25.
Kalayu was not far back in 3:59.28.
Agathe Guillemot of France took third place in 3:59.60 and was the only other participant to go sub-four minutes.
Last night’s race marked Jepkosgei’s second competitive appearance in a week after she previously finished runner-up in the women’s 800m at the eighth Irena Szewinska Memorial in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
The meeting was a gold level event on the World Athletics Continental Tour.
The 34-year-old is expected to be a part of the kingdom’s athletics national team that will be going for gold at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi and Nagoya in Japan in September and October of this year.
