A private Gulfstream G200 jet crashed at La Romana International Airport on Sunday while attempting an emergency landing, killing two crew members. There were no passengers on board.
The aircraft had arrived from Puerto Rico and refuelled before taking off for Austin, Texas. However, shortly after take-off, the crew reported an engine failure.
In an attempt to save the aircraft, the flight was directed back towards La Romana. But due to a "high-stress return manoeuvre, the aircraft attempted to approach the runway from an unconventional direction against the prevailing traffic pattern," according to preliminary reports.
The jet lost stability on its final landing approach, causing it to descend onto a grassy area within the airport's perimeter and burst into flames upon impact.
