Best known as a member of the boy band One Direction, the new solo release is set to be his fourth overall and second in a row to tackle the theme of love and romance after The Show (2023).
In an interview, Niall explained that he wrote the title track after meeting his long-time girlfriend for the first time at a dinner party, and recalled how he felt the night before.
“I was very single. The way I would look at it is, a lot of my life is based around my job,” he said.
“Those gaps that I would have in between jobs were just being at home doing nothing, chilling out, and counting down the days until I go back out on the road and do it all again. I was free-spirited and not particularly looking for anything or anyone. And then however the world works, the opposite happened,” he added.
He also revealed that the album’s closer The End of an Era was re-written along with songwriters John Ryan and Julian Bunetta, following the passing of his former bandmate Liam Payne. Initially meant to be a nostalgic reflection on the passing of time, he now considers the song a tribute and celebration of his life and their friendship.
“John and Julian lived next door to Liam for a long time and we all grew up together. For the three of us, it was actually quite a crazy experience to have to write a song like that because you don’t ever expect to, but something that we all felt like we had to do for ourselves, for anyone who’s lost anyone, for the fans, for anyone that knew Liam. It felt like the right thing to do,” he explained.
