Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) chief executive officer Sultan bin Abdulrahman Al Marshad has confirmed that the King Abdullah Medical City project in Bahrain is progressing rapidly, with all construction, fitting-out and equipment works expected to be completed ahead of its official opening in 2027.
He said the city is set to become one of Bahrain’s leading healthcare and educational institutions.
Mr Al Marshad made the remarks during his visit to Bahrain to sign the remaining contracts for the King Abdullah Medical City project.
Speaking at the residence of the Saudi Ambassador, he described the medical city as one of the Fund’s most significant development projects in the kingdom. It is expected to become a major pillar of Bahrain’s healthcare sector by providing advanced medical services, while also serving as a teaching hospital affiliated with the Arabian Gulf University.
The facility will help train medical professionals, support medical education and scientific research, and deliver healthcare services to citizens and residents.
He added that the project will give priority to employing Bahraini professionals, creating more job opportunities for local talent while supporting the kingdom’s efforts to enhance the efficiency and development of its healthcare sector. He said the medical city would represent a qualitative addition to Bahrain’s healthcare and medical education systems.
Mr Al Marshad also noted that the development partnership between the SFD and Bahrain spans more than five decades, during which the Fund has financed numerous strategic projects that have supported sustainable development in the kingdom. Total SFD financing in Bahrain has now exceeded 10 billion Saudi riyals (BD1bn).
Looking ahead, he revealed that the Fund is continuing to work with the relevant Bahraini authorities on financing new development projects. These include the proposed fourth Muharraq bridge, linking Manama and Muharraq, as well as the Sports City project. He said these initiatives reflect the depth of the strategic partnership between the two brotherly countries.
