ATHLETICS – Bahrain's up-and-coming elite athletes Hamse Dhabar and Alaa Samuel both claimed solid third-place finishes at the Meeting International d’Athletisme de la Province de Liege in Belgium.
The competition was a Bronze-level event on the World Athletics Continental Tour, and it featured top-class athletes from around the world.
Dhabar claimed third in the men’s 3,000 metres steeplechase while Samuel took the same position in the men’s 400m while clocking his season’s best time.
Twenty-three-year-old Dhabar completed his race in eight minutes 27.82 seconds.
He finished behind winner Samuel Duguna of Ethiopia, who came home in 8:12.63, and runner-up Leo Magnusson of Sweden, who clocked a mark of 8:24.30.
Fourteen runners competed in the run, which marked only the second competitive appearance for Dhabar this 2026 outdoor athletics season.
He previously ran the steeplechase last month at the third Arab Athletics U23 Championships in Ismailia, Egypt, where he claimed the silver medal in his personal best time of 8:25.89.
Meanwhile, in the 400m, Samuel completed his single-lap sprint in 46.35 seconds – his top mark over the distance so far this year.
Ashraf Hussen Osman of Qatar triumphed amongst the seven-sprinter field in 45.27s, while Antoine Matthys Nortje of South Africa came second in 46.23s.
Nineteen-year-old Samuel was making his debut in an international meeting under World Athletics.
He also ran the 400m and 200m earlier this year in Ismailia and at the Arab U20 Championships in Rades, Tunisia, last April.
