Bahrain’s largest public hospital is stepping up its digital transformation drive, with senior health officials reviewing new electronic healthcare systems and service improvements during a tour of the facility.
Supreme Council for Health chairman Lieutenant General Dr Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa visited Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) yesterday, where he was received by Government Hospitals chief executive Dr Mariam Al Jalahma, along with senior officials, medical, nursing and administrative staff.
Lt Gen Dr Shaikh Mohammed reviewed the latest digital projects being implemented at the hospital.
He stressed the importance of continuing to develop healthcare infrastructure and advance digital transformation to improve the integration, efficiency and quality of healthcare services.
He praised the dedication and professionalism of medical, nursing and administrative teams across Government Hospitals and their commitment to delivering high-quality patient care.
During the tour, he was briefed on operational procedures at SMC and measures being taken to improve service delivery, efficiency and continuity, contributing to better patient experience.
Lt Gen Dr Shaikh Mohammed also reviewed the new Medical Records Management System (MAK-RMS), one of the key initiatives supporting digital transformation across Government Hospitals. The system provides a secure and integrated electronic health platform connecting the various Government Hospitals and enables medical staff to access patients’ health information in an organised manner.
This strengthens continuity of care, speeds up procedures and supports more accurate clinical decision-making in line with approved information security, privacy and data protection standards.
The tour also included visits to several medical facilities and departments, including outpatient clinics, clinics in the Al Fateh Building and the Accident and Emergency Unit.
Lt Gen Dr Shaikh Mohammed reviewed the patient triage process, the services provided to patients and ongoing efforts to enhance response times and improve the quality and safety of healthcare services.
Dr Al Jalahma said Government Hospitals would continue implementing development and digital transformation projects in line with strategic plans to improve healthcare quality and strengthen patient safety.
“The development of electronic healthcare systems, together with automation and digital transformation projects, represents a pivotal step towards building a more integrated, efficient and sustainable government healthcare system.
“These initiatives also support the sector in keeping pace with rapid developments in healthcare and contribute to improving patients’ experiences and the quality of services.”
Bahrain’s government hospitals are advancing major digitalisation initiatives, highlighted by the expansion of the Tammini Platform which is designed to strengthen communication between patients’ families and medical teams.
The digital health service provides secure video and audio calls, regular health updates and messaging services for families of patients receiving treatment in critical care, surgical and specialised hospital departments.
The platform’s first phase is being expanded across 16 critical departments, including intensive care units, operating theatres and maternity wards.
A second phase will extend the service to 66 general wards, covering more than 85 treatment locations across Government Hospitals.
