VOLLEYBALL – Algeria secured a well-deserved 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-18) victory over defending champions Saudi Arabia last night in the second Arab Youth Volleyball Championship, currently being played in the kingdom.
The Algerians controlled the contest from the start and claimed their second win in three outings so far in the under-17 tournament, which is being played in a single round-robin.
They had previously also triumphed against Jordan but had lost their opening clash against hosts Bahrain.
Saudi, meanwhile, suffered a second defeat.
After opening their repeat title bid with a five-set victory against Kuwait, they went down in straight sets to Egypt before bowing yesterday to the Algerians.
Last night’s contest was the lone fixture for the day.
A full programme of action resumes today with three matches on the cards at Isa bin Rashid Volleyball Arena at Isa Sports City in Riffa.
At 3pm, Algeria will be looking to carry over their momentum in a crucial clash against Egypt, who are one of two unbeaten sides so far along with the Bahrainis.
Kuwait and Jordan then lock horns at 5pm, to be followed by the main game between Bahrain and Saudi at 7pm.
The nationals have taken all three of their assignments to date and have yet to concede a set.
Their wins were against Jordan, Algeria, and Kuwait.
Bahrain will complete their tournament schedule against Egypt on Sunday on the championship’s concluding night – an affair that is widely expected to decide this year’s Arab youth title.
That game is also scheduled to begin at 7pm.
Bahrain were silver-medallists in the inaugural edition of Arab championship held in 2024, but are looking to go one better this year on their home floor.
