TENNIS – Iga Swiatek rallied from a break down in the deciding set to beat Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina 6-3 1-6 6-3 at the Canadian Open on Wednesday, securing her place in a final for the first time this season.
Swiatek will take on Elena Rybakina for the title at the US Open tune-up event after the Australian Open champion beat Coco Gauff 5-7 6-2 6-2.
In the men’s side, defending champion Ben Shelton will face Brandon Nakashima for the title today after both Americans advanced in straight sets to the final of a key US Open warm-up event.
Fifth seed Shelton secured a 6-2 6-3 victory over Learner Tien under the lights in Montreal on Wednesday, snapping a two-match losing streak against his compatriot.
Shelton, 23, recovered quickly to close out the match and set up an all-American final with Nakashima, who earlier beat Spain’s Rafael Jodar 7-6(3) 6-4 to reach his first Masters 1000 final.
Swiatek, who won one of her six Grand Slam titles in Flushing Meadows in 2022, secured the rain-delayed first set in Toronto before Svitolina turned the tables and broke the Pole twice in a one-sided second set.
Svitolina broke to grab a 3-2 lead in the decider but former world number one Swiatek reeled off the final four games to claim victory.
