Indian police fired water cannons and clashed with demonstrators in the Indian city of Patna on Tuesday (August 25), as protesters demanding the cancellation of the 70th Bihar Public Service Commission exam attempted to march to the state governor's official residence.
Dozens of protesters climbed over police barricades and shaking metal barriers as officers attempted to hold the crowds back, with at least one person seen injured on the ground and carried away by fellow demonstrators. Police then deployed water cannons on the crowds, with some demonstrators dancing and posing as the jets of water hit them, before pushing through the police line.
India's Supreme Court created a panel last Thursday (August 20) to investigate allegations of police violence and of attacks on security personnel by demonstrators during youth protests that forced the education minister to resign last month.
The protests were triggered by the leak of question papers for a national medical college entrance exam. Demonstrations began in New Delhi and spread to other cities after tens of thousands of people attempting to march on parliament were met with tear gas and baton charges.
The demonstrations, seen as the worst political crisis of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's third term, ended after then-education minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned.
