US President Donald Trump said yesterday that the war between the US and Iran would end ‘very soon.’
Trump said in a Press interview: “I think the war with Iran will end soon, because the Strait of Hormuz is open. Many ships are now passing through it, and we are allowing them to pass. There are no more mines. You may have seen our announcement yesterday. We have cleared all the mines, and the Strait is now operational.”
He added that US military and economic pressure on Iran was bearing fruit. “Those things are going towards a very big victory,” Trump said, adding: “We’re going to have a big victory here very soon.”
The US president stressed that the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has disrupted shipping since the outbreak of the war, was fully open.
“We can say that indeed, as you know, because the Strait is open. We take a lot of ships through the Strait now. We’re taking them in. The mines are gone,” Trump said.
Negotiations between Iran and the US have stalled over disagreements concerning the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Since the war began with a US-Israeli attack on Iran on February 28, Tehran has effectively closed the vital waterway, while Washington has responded by imposing a naval blockade on Iranian ports.
Shipping through the Strait remains largely halted, disrupting global energy markets, as Washington demands the restoration of maritime traffic to its pre-war levels.
Trump also said he did not believe Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei was dead. Asked about his condition, Trump said: “I don’t think he’s dead. He was very seriously wounded. The left side of his body, the arm, the leg, the whole thing. He was very seriously wounded. But I don’t think he’s dead.”
