US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said yesterday that the US is closely co-ordinating with GCC countries on developments in the region, noting that there is a consensus that Iran’s activities in the region are ‘malign’.
Speaking to the media, Rubio said that all countries in the region face threats from Iranian proxies, pointing out that the activities of the Houthis in Yemen ‘represent a deep problem’. Rubio said reaching an agreement with Iran would require ‘hard work over a period of time’, adding that there is international support for the US sanctions imposed on Tehran.
He noted that US President Donald Trump has several options available for dealing with Iran, including military options. Rubio said the southern passage of the Strait of Hormuz remains open, affirming that the US will continue to defend the straits.
