Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa took part in the 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, which began in Abu Dhabi yesterday.
He visited the UAE on the invitation of UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Lieutenant-General Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The congress brings together around 5,000 ministers, senior officials, experts and specialists, as well as representatives of governments, international organisations and civil society, alongside representatives of academia, research institutions and youth from 97 countries. Participants include 32 justice and interior ministers and 93 expert speakers. The congress is being held under the theme ‘Protecting People and Planet in the Digital Age.’
The Interior Minister highlighted the importance of co-operation and co-ordination in promoting international security and peace, combating transnational crime and responding effectively to rapidly evolving challenges. He noted that the Interior Ministry continues to develop mechanisms for international security co-operation to implement the directives of His Majesty King Hamad, with the support and follow-up of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
The Interior Minister affirmed Bahrain’s steadfast support for efforts to enhance security and stability and promote co-operation and integration among friendly countries.
He explained that organised crime no longer stops at national borders, as its scope has expanded and its forms have evolved, underscoring the importance of exchanging information and expertise and strengthening security efforts.
The event discusses key challenges related to crime prevention and the development of justice systems.
On the sidelines of the congress, the Interior Minister met Malaysian Minister of Home Affairs Saifuddin Nasution bin Ismail. They discussed mechanisms for further developing security co-operation between the two countries, as well as topics aimed at advancing joint efforts and exchanging programmes and expertise to strengthen police work and combat crime in all its forms.
