Abu Subh coast in Duraz could be given a new lease of life as a vibrant waterfront destination featuring food trucks, recreational facilities and other public amenities.
A proposal to turn the site into a dedicated hub for mobile kitchens and local businesses has received the government’s go-ahead.
The plan was approved by Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Minister Wael Al Mubarak.
Northern Municipal Council member and area councillor Bassem Abu Idrees, who put forward the proposal, welcomed the minister’s approval as an important step towards unlocking the potential of the site.
He said the initiative was in line with the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to develop Bahrain’s coastlines and enhance waterfronts across the kingdom.
“We thank the state for allocating the land to accommodate food-truck projects, and we thank Mr Al Mubarak for approving the proposal,” Mr Abu Idrees said. “We hope this will be the beginning of transforming Abu Subh coast into a distinctive waterfront destination that brings together leisure, investment and community service.”

Mr Abu Idrees said his proposal calls for an integrated area for food trucks, productive families and Bahraini entrepreneurs, alongside improvements to the walkway, seating areas, green spaces and parking.
It also proposes the creation of commercial and recreational facilities, while studying opportunities to develop the waterfront and make greater use of the site for sporting and investment activities.
“This is not only about providing spaces for food trucks,” he added. “We want to see a properly planned destination where families can enjoy the waterfront, entrepreneurs can showcase their businesses and the community can benefit from improved public facilities.”
The councillor said the project could provide an accessible platform for small Bahraini businesses and productive families, while adding new life to an existing coastal area.
He expressed hope that the necessary technical studies and implementation procedures would now move forward following the ministerial approval.
“We hope to see the development proposal become a reality and for the required studies and steps to be completed so that the site can be properly utilised,” Mr Abu Idrees said.
Mr Abu Idrees said the allocation and approval represented a positive move towards the organised investment of Abu Subh coast and could ultimately establish it as one of the Northern Governorate’s distinctive waterfronts.
“The proposal now puts the focus on the next stage – turning the approved concept into a destination where the sea provides the backdrop and Bahraini businesses provide the flavour.”
