A 24-year-old man has been arrested within eight hours of a report being filed over an alleged attempt to assault and harass a schoolgirl on her way to a designated school bus pick-up point.
The arrest was announced today by the Interior Ministry, which said the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science, in co-ordination with the Northern Governorate Police Directorate, acted swiftly after receiving a complaint from the girl’s guardian.
The ministry said the girl was heading to one of the designated gathering points for students using school buses when the incident allegedly occurred.
Police were able to identify and arrest the suspect less than eight hours after receiving the report, the ministry added.
The General Directorate praised the vigilance of police officers and their rapid response, stressing the importance of reporting incidents promptly to enable security authorities to take effective action.
The authorities also said they had monitored information circulating on social media about the incident.
The ministry urged members of the public to report suspicious or criminal behaviour without delay, stressing that swift reporting can help police respond quickly and apprehend anyone who threatens public safety.
Legal procedures have been initiated against the suspect ahead of the case being referred to the Public Prosecution.
The ministry did not provide further details about the alleged incident or identify the student, to protect her privacy.
