As the fifth session of the sixth legislative term approaches, attention is turning to the Shura Council and the Parliament, with parliamentary activity expected to intensify ahead of elections for the First Deputy Speaker of the Parliament and the heads of its standing committees.
The elections will take place alongside a legislative, financial and services agenda featuring a number of draft laws, decree-laws and issues related to citizens’ needs and national development priorities.
In the Parliament, parliamentary circles are discussing the names of around five MPs who may compete for the post of First Deputy Speaker, amid expectations that understandings and alliances will take shape ahead of the first procedural session.
The outcome of the election is expected to influence the contest for committee chairmanships, which are usually decided during the second week of the session.
Meanwhile, the possibility of a Services Committee member joining the council’s bureau has raised questions about how the committee’s current membership of five will be maintained.
In the Shura Council, legislative, economic and services-related issues are at the top of the committees’ priorities.
