An Abu Dhabi mother is seeking to incorporate ChatGPT into her will to guide her son after her death under a pioneering legal proposal drafted for court registration.
The proposal, prepared by law firm Expatriate Law, incorporates "The Living Wishes Protocol", which would instruct guardians to consult the AI chatbot alongside human judgment.
Lawyers clarified that the chatbot would serve as an advisory reference based on stored parental values rather than acting as a legal guardian.
The AI system will be supplied with detailed records of the mother's core values, beliefs, and personal principles, along with explicit instructions for her son's upbringing.
"The idea is that, if she dies, her son's guardians would consult ChatGPT when making major decisions about his upbringing," said Byron James, partner at Expatriate Law.
"There is also provision for annual reviews, independent human oversight, and increasing weight being given to the child's own wishes as he grows older," James added.
Under the draft proposal, the AI chatbot will maintain records of all queries while strictly prohibited from exercising legal authority or impersonating the mother.
"A traditional letter of wishes is necessarily static, reflecting only what the parent anticipated at the time it was written," James explained.
"What we are exploring is whether AI can help keep that guidance relevant to decisions taken five, 10, or 15 years after a parent's death," he said.
The proposal remains subject to official review and has not yet been approved or registered by Abu Dhabi courts.
