Two taxi drivers working at Bahrain International Airport will be selected to take part in a pilot project testing electric vehicles, as Bahrain moves towards more sustainable transport offerings.
The Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry has opened registration for those interested in joining the trial, which will be carried out in co-operation with Fakhro Motors.
Applications will remain open until Sunday, with only two to be selected according to specified eligibility criteria.
Applicants must be authorised to operate taxis at the airport and have more than five years of experience working there. They must also have completed the required training courses, including tourism, customer service and first-aid.
Drivers must have no serious traffic violations, be comfortable using modern technologies and be willing to operate electric vehicles while complying with the conditions governing the trial.
The ministry said on its social media accounts that applications would be ‘ranked against the established criteria’ before the two participants are chosen.
The project will introduce two electric vehicles into the airport’s taxi fleet to check on their suitability for ongoing commercial operation.
Officials will evaluate the vehicles’ operational efficiency, running costs and charging requirements, while also gathering feedback on the experience of both drivers and passengers.
The trial is intended to give taxi drivers a direct role in assessing the technology, with their observations helping the authorities determine the feasibility of wider adoption across the sector.
The ministry will co-ordinate with relevant authorities to complete the operational and technical preparations, including equipping the vehicles and addressing charging infrastructure and safety requirements.
Once the trial begins, the performance of both vehicles will be monitored, with operational data and feedback collected throughout the testing period.
