The European Chamber of Commerce in Bahrain (ECBH) was officially launched last night at a reception hosted jointly by German Ambassador Henning Simon and the EU Ambassador to the kingdom, Christophe Farnaud, marking an important milestone in strengthening economic relations between Bahrain and Europe.
The reception, held at the German ambassador’s residence in Saar, was attended by Bahrain’s Minister of Industry and Commerce Abdulla bin Adel Fakhro and Luigi Di Maio, European Union Special Representative for the Gulf region. The ambassadors of Cyprus, Italy and France, senior officials, VIPs and representatives of Bahraini institutions and business leaders were also present.
Established with the support of the European Union, the ECBH aims to serve as a dedicated platform for European companies operating in or seeking to enter the Bahraini market, while also helping Bahraini businesses explore opportunities across the EU’s Single Market of 27-member states.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Fakhro said that business between Bahrain and the countries of the EU dates back centuries but in recent years there has seen a growth and strengthening of co-operation.
He added that in the light of the current circumstances this relationship between Bahrain and the EU is of even greater importance.
“Today we are living in a very uncertain world, especially when it comes to the security of our logistics and supply chains, as well as critical national security factors, such as defence, food and medicine security, and the like,” he said. “I believe the next phase of this relationship will bring us closer together, will increase not only our trade but much more collaboration on investment, partnerships and joint ventures.”
The chamber will support businesses by providing access to market information, relevant networks and potential partners, helping companies navigate new markets and develop cross-border business opportunities.
“The launch of the European Chamber of Commerce in Bahrain is a strong signal of Europe’s commitment to Bahrain as a partner for business and investment,” said Mr Simon. “At a time when regional stability and economic resilience are more important than ever, bringing European and Bahraini businesses closer together is particularly valuable.
“I’m confident that the chamber will become a place where ideas turn into partnerships and where the long-standing friendship between Bahrain and Europe finds new expression through business co-operation.”
Mr Di Maio highlighted the significance of the opening.
Gulf states have faced unprecedented challenges in the wake of Iranian aggression, as well as terrorism from its Houthi proxy in Yemen.
“The founding of the chamber comes at a time of significant security challenges to the Gulf region,” he said. “I’m deeply convinced that the European Chamber of Commerce will play an important role, not only in rising up to the current and future joint challenges but also in providing opportunities to EU and Bahraini economies.
“It is just another key step to make our alliance stronger than ever.”
