More than 1,500 kind-hearted individuals walked together last night to raise awareness of breast cancer as part of a global campaign.
The Bahrain Cancer Society (BCS) organised its annual walkathon at Water Garden City in Seef.
“As part of the global initiative marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month, BCS is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of early detection, healthy nutrition, maintaining a balanced weight, and engaging in regular physical activity – all essential steps in reducing cancer risk and enhancing overall health,” BCS president Dr Abdulrahman Ebrahim Fakhro told the GDN.
People of all ages came together for the event, which has been running for more than 30 years, according to organisers.
This year’s walkathon was held under the theme ‘Together We Win’ and its sponsors included the Gulf Daily News and its sister newspaper Akhbar Al Khaleej.
Educational materials were distributed and cancer awareness merchandise was sold to raise funds for awareness programmes and research.
More than 30 entities across the kingdom supported the initiative, including the Interior, Works, and Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture ministries.
“When we come together as a community, there is no limit to what we can accomplish in the fight against cancer,” Dr Fakhro added.
“We are happy to bring this annual event back every year. Our main goal is to educate people about breast cancer and continue to raise awareness about what people can do to stay healthy, as well as the importance of getting tested regularly.”
The evening began with an opening ceremony, where organisers stressed the importance of early screening, before participants set off on the walk.
Observed every October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month unites individuals and organisations worldwide to increase understanding of the disease and emphasise the importance of early detection. In Bahrain, breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women.
The campaign also highlights the importance of supporting patients and survivors, while raising funds for research and initiatives aimed at improving prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
