Bahrain has welcomed the United Nations Security Council’s adoption of a presidential statement strongly condemning the ‘escalatory’ attacks by the Houthi militia against Saudi Arabia.
The statement condemned attacks targeting civil aviation and energy infrastructure, including ‘reckless’ strikes on King Khalid International Airport that left 14 people dead and more than 300 injured, as well as attacks on other airports and Saudi Aramco facilities and continuing threats to the safety of commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Bab Al Mandab.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry emphasised that the Houthi attacks constituted flagrant violations of international humanitarian law, the United Nations Charter and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
It extended sincere condolences to the Saudi government and people and the families of the victims, while wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
The ministry commended the Security Council’s expression of solidarity with Saudi Arabia against attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, as well as its recognition of Saudi Arabia’s inherent right to self-defence in accordance with international law.
It also welcomed the council’s demand for an immediate end to Houthi attacks and military escalation.
The ministry reiterated Bahrain’s full support for measures taken by Saudi Arabia to protect its sovereignty, security and stability, emphasising that Saudi security is an integral part of the security of Bahrain and the GCC, and a fundamental pillar of regional stability.
It highlighted the importance of the presidential statement’s call for the full implementation of Resolution 2216 (2015) and subsequent resolutions, as well as practical co-operation to prevent the Houthi militia from acquiring weapons, funding, training and technical assistance in line with the arms embargo.
It also reiterated support for Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, as well as the efforts of the UN Special Envoy to achieve a comprehensive political settlement.
Bahrain emphasised that, as a member of the Security Council, it remains committed to working with fellow Council members to ensure the full implementation of relevant resolutions, end Houthi terrorist attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure, deter threats to international navigation, and hold the perpetrators and their supporters accountable.
