A food supply branch manager has been fined KD3,000 (approx BD3,600) following a court ruling over the illegal diversion of cooperative society food supplies in Jahra.
Four expatriate workers were sentenced to three years in prison, followed by deportation for their involvement in the theft scheme.
The convicted expats were of Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Indian origin.
An investigation revealed that the workers deducted small quantities in grams from individual sales transactions to divert portions of government-subsidised commodities.
The diverted food supplies were siphoned off without the knowledge of the cooperative society's shareholders.
The crime was uncovered after a Kuwaiti citizen filed a formal complaint that prompted legal authorities to investigate the branch operations.
