A proposed law to criminalise the creation and circulation of AI-generated fake videos and audio recordings faces rejection in the Shura Council, despite growing concerns over the potential misuse of deepfake technology to damage people’s reputations and violate their privacy.
The proposed amendment seeks to introduce a new Article 10 bis to the 2014 Law on Information Technology Crimes, imposing imprisonment and a fine of between BD3,000 and BD10,000, or either punishment, on anyone who produces or manipulates audio or visual material using information technology with the intention of circulating or publishing it – provided that the material could expose another person to contempt or punishment, undermine their honour, damage a family’s reputation or serve an unlawful purpose .
