Vin Diesel has played a street-racing vigilante, a nanny-who-is-also-a-special-Navy-SEAL-agent, and a mobster in recent years, all tough-on-the-surface-with-hearts-of-gold characters. In his latest upcoming action-fantasy film, ‘The Last Witch Hunter’, it’s clear that he’s sticking to those types of characters.
Directed by Breck Eisner, ‘The Last Witch Hunter’ casts Diesel as a member of a secret society who has to protect humanity from the scourge of witches – and not the nice kind from Hogwarts. Cursed with immortality by the most powerful witch, he is prevented from ever reuniting with his loved ones in the afterlife. This also means that he outlives his fellow Witch Hunters, and thus becomes the sole protector against centuries of demonic threats that have attempted, and failed, to destroy all of humanity. However, when the witch who cursed him is resurrected, it looks like his long life of loneliness might finally come to an end.
Diesel is joined by ‘Game of Thrones’ actress Rose Leslie, ‘The Lord of the Rings' actor Elijah Wood, and two-time Academy Award winner Michael Caine. The cast also includes Rena Owen, Isaach De Bankolé, Lotte Verbeek, Kurt Angle, Julie Engelbrecht and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson.
‘The Last Witch Hunter’ is based on a script written by ‘Priest’ writer Cory Goodman. Diesel revealed that this could be the start of new franchise. He posted on Facebook that development is already underway on a sequel to the film.
‘The Last Witch Hunter’ is scheduled to arrive in theatres on October 23rd.
