Bollywood actor Salman Khan can breathe a sigh of relief as his driver Ashok Singh today told the court that he was driving the car at the time of the accident in 2002. "The witness [Ashok Singh], present in the court, said that during the incident he was driving the car. And later the witness was cross-examined," Public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat told the media. "The court has asked to give the final argument on [April] 1st," he added.
According to a leading website, Singh said, “A tyre burst and the car was dragged to the left….I tried to turn the steering wheel but it was hard, then I tried to apply brakes but by then the car had climbed the stairs of bakery.I was in a state of shock and Salman was sitting on the left side. He tried to open the door but it got jammed. He got down from my side which was on the right. (sic)”
A few days back, Salman in his statement to the court said that claimed that he was not at the wheel at the time of the accident. "Salman Khan has told the court that his driver Ashok Singh was driving the car and he had not consumed alcohol," the actor's lawyer had told reporters.
In 2002, Salman’s car had rammed into a bakery shop in Mumbaion September 28, 2002, killing one person and injuring four others who were sleeping outside on a pavement. The actor is charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. He can face a maximum of 10 years in jail if proven guilty.
