Riyadh – The law governing the contractual relationship between employees and their employers in Saudi Arabia could soon be amended.
Under the draft legislation, highly-skilled expatriate workers would be allowed to swap employers during a specified period of time.
The newly amended article would apply only to expatriates whose contracts with their previous employers have expired.
“The new amended law aims at providing flexibility for high-skilled expatriate employees to swap companies”, said Labour and Social Development Ministry Undersecretary for labour policies Dr Ahmed Al Qattan.
In a statement to Al Eqtisadiah, Dr Al Qattan said that the draft legislation is still under study pending final approval.
He described expatriate employees’ “freedom of movement” as a positive factor which would make the labour market more attractive to skilled foreign workers, enhance competitiveness and promote a business-friendly environment, in line with the Saudi 2030 Vision.
