First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports and President of the Bahrain Athletics Federation Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa hailed the University of Bahrain’s decision to establish the Khalid bin Hamad Sports Center for Mixed Martial Arts.
He also underscored the launch of the academic program for mixed martial arts in the second quarter of the current academic year set to begin in February.
This came as he received in his majles in Riffa Dr Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al Janahi, Chairman of Bahrain University, Professor Mona Al Ansari, Dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Physical Therapy, Dr Fuad Al-Ansari, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and Dr Osama Al Jowder, Dean of Student Affairs and Dr Maha Al-Rashed.
During the meeting, Shaikh Khalid discussed with Dr Al Janahi the United States’ experience as to the adoption of wrestling within the academic courses at US universities.
He also praised the successes and positive results that sport had achieved in terms of the participation of US teams in various forums and tournaments.
Opportunity
He noted that the inclusion of this sport as an academic syllabus also gives an educational opportunity for young practitioners for knowledge and cultural growth with respect to the sport in parallel with the requirements on the practical and field level.
Shaikh Khalid asserted that the University of Bahrain was one of the leading educational edifices because of its large academic and scientific components and distinctive efforts to improve education movement in the Kingdom.
Shaikh Khalid was briefed on a presentation made by Dr Al Janahi which includes academic and operational plan for the university to support MMA.
Shaikh Khalid praised the efforts being exerted by the University of Bahrain in implementing the visions and aspirations for the development of MMA in Bahrain.
He also hailed the role of the university in promoting mixed martial arts as safe and legal, while encouraging Bahraini youth to get involved in the sport.
For his part, Dr Al Janahi said: “The University of Bahrain is honoured to become the centre of the international sport of mixed martial arts which is one of the oldest sports in the world and is very popular among the youths.”
