THE postal department has seen an upswing in business and revenue over the past few years with a large number of parcels arriving from abroad, revealed a senior Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry official yesterday.
Ministry assistant under-secretary for Posts Shaikh Bader bin Khalifa Al Khalifa said Bahrain Post was seeing a boom with a bigger workload.
He was speaking as the Shura Council unanimously approved in its weekly session yesterday three conventions under the International Postal Union (IPU) for 2008, 2012 and 2016.
“The conventional post has been phased out and replaced with parcels of items purchased through websites and the Internet,” said Shaikh Bader.
“Post has seen a growth in work and revenue over the past few years, which is clearly a boom, as the value and weight of what we deal with have gone up,” he added.
“We have to manage time and power as we need to calculate individual parcels but our Bahrainisation employment levels continue to be high despite a number of employees going on retirement.”
The Shura Council also approved unanimously a mutual taxation agreement between Bahrain and Egypt.
Both will now be ratified by His Majesty King Hamad.
Meanwhile, Shura secretary general Osama Al Asfoor read out a statement congratulating the nation on Bahraini Diplomacy Day, which falls tomorrow. He also read out a statement paying condolences on the death of Sultan Qaboos bin Said of Oman who died late on Friday.
