Doha: Customs official foiled two different attempts to smuggle 17.8 kilogrammes of marijuana and gold worth QR600,000.
An air cargo customs officer became suspicious of a shipment and screened the consignment to detect the illegal drugs.
In a separate operation, the officials arrested an Asian passenger in transit and seized 6.5 kilogrammes of gold worth QR600,000.
The man approached the customs officers and expressed his willingness to declare a quantity of gold bars he was carrying in his bag for transit.
The customs officials checked the gold bars and issued him with the transit statement.
However, a customs officer became suspicious of him and frisked the passenger to discover 84 small bars hidden under his clothes.
Ahmed bin Ali Al Mohannadi, Chairman of the General Authority of Customs honoured the two customs officers who foiled the smuggling attempt and commended their alertness and dedication in performing their duty, reported local Arabic daily Al-Sharq.
