Riyadh: In a first for the country, seasonal decoratives such as Christmas trees and glittery ornaments went up for sale at a gift shop in Riyadh, as part of loosening social restrictions after Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman pledged to steer the country towards an “open, moderate Islam.”
Just until three years ago, it was impossible to sell such items in the country, AFP reported.
Rules were relaxed in the kingdom after a 2016 decree was issued by the Saudi cabinet, restricting the Saudi Committee of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice to pursue and arrest violators.
