TWO men jailed for three years each for mugging an expatriate man, twice on the same day, have lost their final appeals.
The Bahrainis, aged 25 and 26, stole the Indian victim’s mobile phone from his back pocket in Manama in June last year.
Minutes later, the 32-year-old realised that the device was missing and used another phone to dial his number.
The 25-year-old took the call and agreed to hand over the phone back to the victim in return for BD20.
When the defendants met the victim hours later, on the same day, they assaulted him and stole his second phone and wallet.
The men were jailed for three years by the High Criminal Court in October last year.
Their pleas were rejected by the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court in December last year.
A final appeal was lodged against their convictions at the Cassation Court which upheld their sentences yesterday.
“The defendants attacked the victim and stole his mobile phones and wallet,” read the court ruling.
“The victim’s friend filmed the assault on his mobile phone which was used as evidence.”
The victim recounted how he was mugged twice on the same day.
“I was walking and one of them (defendant aged 26) distracted me, while his co-defendant took my mobile phone from my back pocket,” read the court documents.
“I soon realised that my phone was missing and called my number. He (defendant aged 26) agreed to give back my phone.
“I met the defendants later and they attacked me and stole my wallet as well.
“I was yelling for help and my friend took a video of the attack.”
