TWO government officials will stand trial for allegedly stealing nearly BD70,000 to benefit a contractor.
The Bahrainis working at the Jaffari Waqf Directorate maintenance and engineering department will appear at the High Criminal Court on November 21.
They could be jailed for up to 10 years if found guilty of embezzlement, theft and forgery.
They are said to have fraudulently given a contractor BD69,000 for a project – which was more than the money needed for the construction of the site.
Officials investigated the incident and found that the defendants had allegedly forged official documents to help the contractor.
The contractor has also been implicated in the case. All three have been remanded in custody.
“Following investigations the defendants were arrested in connection with embezzlement, forgery and theft,” read a prosecution statement yesterday.
“The two officials at the Jaffari Waqf (Endowments) Directorate were questioned and they admitted to giving money to the contractor without him deserving it.
“They forged official documents which helped in the theft of BD69,000.
“An expert report proved that the contractor took money for work he did not do on a project.”
