BAHRAIN’S hopes of a promotion were ruthlessly dashed yesterday as they went down to the UAE 3-0 in the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone Group Four in Amman.
A victory in this promotional playoff would have elevated Bahrain into Group Three next year.
In Pool ‘B’, Jordan beat Oman 2-1. The UAE and Jordan will move into Group Three next season.
In the first singles, Bahrain’s Abdulkarim Abdulnabi lost to UAE’s Fahad Ali Janahi 6-0, 6-3.
Hassan Abdulnabi put up a better show in the second singles but could not draw Bahrain level as he went down to Omar Al Awadhi 6-0, 7-5.
The doubles was a more competitive clash but again Bahrain fell short as Yousif Qaed and Elyas Abdulnabi lost to the Omani pair Abdulrahman Al Janahi and Omar Al Awadhi 6-4, 6-3.
Bahrain had earlier beaten Mongolia 2-1, lost to Jordan 0-3 and routed Iraq 3-0 to finish runners-up in Group ‘B’ behind leaders Jordan.
In the other match, Jordan rallied from a match down to beat Oman 2-1.

Jordan’s Seif Adas lost to Oman’s Mohammed Al Nabhani 6-3, 6-7, 6-7. But Mousa Al Kotop defeated Abdulla Al Barwani 6-2, 6-4 to level the scores for the hosts.
In the doubles, Jordan’s Hamzeh Al Aswad and Mousa Al Kotop defeated Oman’s Abdulla Al Barwani and Mohammed Al Nabhani 6-2, 6-2 to seal victory.
In the fifth and sixth place playoff, Iraq defeated Saudi Arabia 3-0 while in the seventh and eighth place playoff, Myanmar defeated Tajikistan 2-1.
