Pope Leo sat with the pilots of an Iberia flight from Madrid to Barcelona on Tuesday (June 9) on the second leg of his Spain tour. The pontiff was invited by Captain Pablo Martinez Nunez aboard the Airbus A320, and waved at Spanish Air Force fighter jet pilots escorting the plane before talking to them on the radio.
Leo was to inaugurate the newest tower of the Sagrada Familia, the modernist basilica that has become the world's tallest church and which was visible from the plane as they approached the airport.
He was also to visit an abbey in nearby Montserrat and meet the leader of the northeastern region of Catalonia and hold a prayer vigil with young people at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium.
