TWO Bahraini women will represent the Kingdom at the 2016 Paralympic Games to be held from September 7 to 18 in Rio de Janeiro, reports Mazin Rizk.
Fatima Abdulrazaq Safr will participate in the shot put after claiming the highest world qualification ranking by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) while her compatriot Ruba Al Amry is in the discus throw fray after claiming fourth place in the world qualification rankings.
The Bahrain Disabled Sports Federation (BDSF) have stepped up the two athletes’ preparations for the Games by charting out a intense training programme for the duo.
President of BDSF Shaikh Mohammed bin Duaij Al Khalifa said they are currently training five days a week and it will be soon increased by one more day.
Diets
The duo have also met nutritionists from Health Watchers to make sure their diets are up to the mark.
Shaikh Mohammed pointed out that the women’s qualifications for the 2016 Paralympic Games was a result of some careful planning back in 2014 leading up to the two athletes meeting the IPC qualification norms.
Meanwhile, Safr and Al Amry expressed their pride in representing the Kingdom of Bahrain on the world stage. They thanked the BDSF board members for their support and encouragement.
Bahrain made its Summer Paralympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984 and has taken part in every Games since then winning nine medals, all of them in track and field, one gold, three silver and five bronze.
However, they have not won any medals since 2000 and Safr and Al Amry are keen to end that drought in Rio.
