MORE than six million patient-visits were recorded by the emergency department of a public hospital over the last 10 years.
The King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH) registered around 2m visits at its outpatient clinics and more than 18,000 natural and caesarean deliveries during this period.
The hospital has performed 142,777 operations at its most modern facilities since the opening of its surgical departments in January 2012.
The figures were released by KHUH, Bahrain’s second largest public hospital in Muharraq, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
The hospital opened on February 6, 2012.
On the occasion, KHUH Commander Major General Dr Shaikh Salman bin Ateyatallah Al Khalifa reiterated the hospital’s commitment to serving citizens and residents. He noted a steady rise in the number of patients visiting its complex for healthcare services over the last decade.
“We had 120 beds at KHUH when it opened in 2012 and now it has now gone up to 348,” said Maj Gen Dr Shaikh Salman.
“This shows the successful expansion projects of the KHUH administration, designed to match the surge in volume of activity in the hospital.
“Since its opening on February 6, 2012, KHUH registered 2,389,483 visits to the outpatient clinics, while approximately 12,839 patients were received in the intensive care units for adults and premature infants.
“More than 6,197,536 were referred to the KHUH Emergency Medicine Department which opened in April 2012 and 18,311 natural and caesarean deliveries were performed at the hospital during the past 10 years.
“By allocating administrative and medical teams of the highest levels of efficiency, providing advanced medical equipment, the latest technologies and medical and diagnostic curricula, and adopting the best therapeutic, training and research practices, we will ensure that KHUH is the top medical destination in Bahrain.”
The hospital commemorates its day of establishment in February, annually, which coincided this year with the 54th BDF Day.
Quality
“KHUH has been providing high quality medical and healthcare services, even amidst the great challenges posed by the coronavirus (Covid 19),” said Maj Gen Dr Shaikh Salman.
“We overcame the difficult stages of the pandemic, ensuring the protection of patients and visitors in the hospital, as evidenced in our annual reports.
“KHUH underwent major and multiple expansions and received global health accreditations.”
Maj Gen Dr Shaikh Salman underlined the efficiency of health system at KHUH, which he said was the result of continuous investment in infrastructure.
The hospital attracted top medical professionals and integrated smart healthcare services that were implemented according to integrated plans, he said.
“Qualitative, complex, life-saving surgeries were performed on patients of different ages at the KHUH.
“Approximately 142,777 operations have been performed in the hospital since 2012.”
Maj Gen Dr Shaikh Salman also highlighted modern technologies brought into the hospital, especially the solar energy project.
“This led to the production of clean renewable energy and rationalisation of electrical energy consumption,” he said.
“The contribution matched to support 40 to 50 per cent of the energy consumed by the hospital during the day, and an average of 25pc of the total consumption per year.”
Other highlights are the implementation of Hope, the hospital information system, the setting up of the Bahrain Oncology Centre, the fertility unit, the nuclear medicine and radioisotope centre, the sleep laboratory, the stroke unit, and the medical waste treatment system.
