THE BBC has announced that it will close several foreign language operations after 84 years due to cost, inflation and licencing fees.
Radio station broadcasts in languages including Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Hindi, Bengali, Indonesian and Tamil will cease and move exclusively online, the BBC said in a statement.
The radio stations will be axed by BBC World Service as part of its plans to scrap linear broadcast content and move to digital platforms to ‘increase impact with audiences’.
The move will cost approximately 382 people their jobs worldwide.
