A Pakistani drugs mule who was found wincing in pain at Bahrain International Airport after hiding packages up his back passage has been jailed for life and fined BD5,000.
He had attempted to smuggle 90 capsules containing crystal meth, known locally as shabu, into the country after being promised a job in Bahrain.
The 42-year-old was apprehended at the terminal on July 27 after the authorities were alerted by his nervous behaviour and the fact that he kept ‘wincing in discomfort’.
An X-ray revealed round objects inside his body, according to court documents. He was taken to Salmaniya Medical Centre (SMC) where he later passed shabu weighing 600gm, valued at BD20,000.
The defendant was found guilty of attempting to smuggle narcotics and being part of a drug trafficking ring by the High Criminal Court yesterday.
He said that another man in Pakistan, who is unknown to the authorities, promised him money and work in Bahrain if he hid the drugs inside his body. The defendant said that he used a gel to help him ease the capsules into place but the pain continued.
