EVERYONE knows that Bahrain’s expatriate residents and locals have lived and worked together for many years and Bahrainis have embraced them wholeheartedly, giving them the freedom to live the way they want and practise their religion.
There is no doubt that over the years we have seen foreign communities have adhered to Bahrain’s laws, customs and traditions and have contributed with their specialisations and experiences in ministries, state agencies and the private sector.
His Majesty King Hamad’s emphasis on the principle of peaceful coexistence and the provision of freedom for expatriates has earned worldwide praise and this has ensured Bahrain is an oasis of security and safety for people of all religions, beliefs and sects.
However, I have noticed that of late many are not adhering to the laws of the state and this is evident in their lack of commitment and disregard for laws and regulations with regard to traffic safety, the environment and public hygiene, work, residence and practising professions in illegal ways to the point of disrespecting the locals and insulting them.
In spite of this, Bahrainis have always respected all communities and do not distinguish between themselves and foreigners. This shows the nobility, class and kindness of citizens and reflects positively on the reputation and prestige of the country.
I think it’s time Arab and other embassies play their role in educating their nationals and emphasising the principle of respect for the sovereignty of the state, its laws and its citizens.
