Never has man been in so much need of his fellow man than today … because the greatness of humanity is not in being human but in being humane.
Today, if we look at our world, when we open our daily newspaper, tune into the television, or scan across social media, we rarely find global news that is good. We only witness sad, tragic and heart-breaking stories, some committed by men of power, others by lunatics who brandish weapons and mow down innocent pupils in classrooms.
So, the question arises, what is wrong with us, or to be more precise, what is wrong IN us?
Certainly it is not a lack of education because the people in power are well educated and those who set out to harm children, often their own classmates, are hardly illiterate.
What we miss is something much greater, something that should be there to govern and protect us all from the wrongs and ills of behaviour and attitude. That can be described in one word … FAITH.
No matter what our religion, all religions came to reform man, to appreciate right from wrong, to know grace from greed, to know kindness from cruelty and to make the correct choices.
It’s down to us.
In this country we are fortunate, comparatively to many other nations, because our society is a tolerant one, one that accepts every faith, which the world can witness today as a result of this special occasion where our monarch, His Majesty King Hamad, has invited the two highest authorities of Christianity and Islam to Bahrain, alongside other religious leaders.
They are here to spread a message of hope and common purpose in uniting us so that we can all act in a more humane manner for the sake of humanity. Coexistence in peace, for the good of all, is something we all pray for.
To quote the late American poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou: ‘Be certain that you do not die without having done something wonderful for humanity’.
