BAHRAIN is a key partner of the United Nations in strengthening peace and security around the world, His Majesty King Hamad said yesterday.
He said the global organisation is playing a crucial role in solving global issues, handling environmental and natural disasters, fighting climate change and poverty as well as serving humanity.
His Majesty praised the UN as he received at Safriya Palace former presidents of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on the occasion of their visit to the kingdom at a royal invitation to participate in a meeting of the Council of Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly (CPUNGA), hosted by Bahrain.
The delegation comprised council chairman and president of the 56th General Assembly session Dr Han Seung-soo and council deputy chairman and president of the 57th session Jan Kavan.
It also included former General Assembly presidents Shaikha Haya bint Rashid Al Khalifa, 61st session; Srgjan Kerim (62nd), Joseph Deiss (65th), Vuk Jeremić (67th), ; Mogens Lykketoft (70th), Miroslav Lajčák (72nd) and UN Office of Counter-Terrorism Director Dr Jehangir Khan.
The King thanked the delegation for accepting the invitation to visit Bahrain and commended its tireless efforts to promote the role of the UN.
He praised Bahrain’s strong relations with their countries and wished the CPUNGA success in serving the goals of the international organisation to foster global peace and security and achieve growth and prosperity for all humankind. He also discussed with them regional and international issues.
The delegation thanked the King and underlined the vital role of the kingdom in backing the UN efforts and briefed him on the meeting’s agenda.
