MAY was slightly warmer than normal with above average wind speeds, according to the monthly weather report.
The mean temperature for the month was 31.7C, which is 0.6C above the long-term normal for the month, said the Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry’s Meteorological Directorate yesterday.
This goes on record as the ninth highest temperature for May since 1902 with the highest mean monthly temperature on record being 33.5C in May 2021.
Meanwhile, the mean maximum temperature of the month was 35.9C – which is 0.2C below the long-term normal – with the highest mean monthly maximum temperature for May at 38.9C recorded in 2021.
“The highest temperature recorded during the month was 43.6C which occurred on May 13 at Bahrain International Airport (BIA) but 46C was recorded on the same day at the Bahrain International Circuit,” said the report.
“The mean minimum temperature of the month was 28.3C, which is 1.1C above the long-term normal, and this goes on record as the seventh highest mean minimum temperature for May since 1946.
“The highest mean monthly minimum temperature for May was 29.1C recorded in 2012.”
According to the report, the lowest temperatures recorded for May were 19.8C on May 6 at Durrat Al Bahrain and 23.1C at BIA on May 7.
Meanwhile, the mean relative humidity was 42 per cent while the mean maximum relative humidity was 62pc and the mean minimum relative humidity was 25pc.
“The maximum relative humidity of 79pc was recorded on May 22 and the minimum relative humidity was 10pc recorded on May 13,” added the report.
“Only trace amounts of precipitation were recorded on May 18, 19 and 20 at BIA; the long-term mean total precipitation for May was 0.5mm and the highest monthly rainfall recorded during May at BIA was 12.7mm in 1907.
“The total monthly precipitation recorded for May last year was 3.8mm at Durrat Al Bahrain and 0.2mm at Sitra Island recorded on May 20.”
The total hours of sunshine for the month were 340.2 hours with the highest monthly total hours of sunshine for May was 370.4 hours recorded in 2021.
Meanwhile, the mean wind speed for the month was nine knots while the prevailing wind was 38pc from the northwest direction.
According to the report, gust winds reached 31 knots on May 2, 14 and 18 at BIA while 32 knots were reached at the King Fahad Causeway on May 2 and 18.
“The easterly to southeasterly winds accounted for 19pc of the observation,” said the report.
“Gust winds reached 31 knots on May 20 at BIA but reached 35 knots on the same day at Durrat Al Bahrain.
“Dust was reported on May 31 with visibility dropping to 2,500 metres at BIA.”
