Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard and his family have been spotted villa hunting in Bahrain as the former Rangers and Aston Villa manager looks set to take over as manager of Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq.
Gerrard is considering an offer to become coach of the club, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters.
“Al Ettifaq made an offer to Gerrard. He welcomed the idea, but asked for time to study the offer,” the source told the news agency.
The former Liverpool captain, 43, left his role as coach of Aston Villa last October after a run of bad results. Prior to that, Gerrard led Rangers to the Scottish Premier League title in 2020-2021 season, finishing the season without any defeats.
Married to former model, Alex Curran, sources told the GDN that they were looking at St Christopher’s School as a possible choice for their youngest children, Lourdes, 11, and Lio, six.
Excited fans took photographs of the star at the Saar junior school site and one posing with a security guard has gone viral on social media.
Many fathers work in the Eastern Province but choose to live in Bahrain and commute across the causeway.
The couple also has two older daughters, Lilly-Ella, 19, and Lexie, 17. The former Reds’ captain regularly gives insight into his happy family life with his 10.8 million Instagram followers.
The Saudi Pro League has embarked on an aggressive period of recruitment, luring Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema to their shores to play for Al Nassr and Al Ittihad respectively, and British newspapers have suggested Sadio Mane is the latest Saudi target as Al Ettifaq ‘make their move for the Bayern Munich outcast – and seek to unite him with fellow Liverpool legend Gerrard’.
Al Ettifaq – who finished seventh in the league – are looking to reinforce their squad ahead of the 2023-2024 campaign. Established after the merging of three clubs in the city of Dammam in 1944, they were the first Saudi team to win an international title – the 1984 Arab Club Champions Cup.
Gerrard was first linked with the position at the weekend and it now appears he is close to being appointed as their head coach after being also spotted in Saudi. Arab football fans have swamped his social media with messages about the Saudi move.
