OWNERS of 152 shared accommodation for expatriate labourers in the Southern Governorate were referred to the Public Prosecution for alleged safety, security and municipal violations over the past three years, it has been revealed.
Southern Municipality director-general Isa Al Buainain stated that a total of 330 places of accommodation had been found to be in violation over the period, mostly in East Riffa, followed by Isa Town, Askar, Zallaq and parts of West Riffa.
Out of 330 owners, 280 have come to the municipality to settle the discrepancies, he added.
“From the 280 owners, 152 were referred to the Public Prosecution and 78 were given grace periods to carry out corrections,” said Mr Al Buainain.
“This followed raids and inspections, alongside the Southern Governorate, Southern Governorate Police Directorate, Interior and Health ministries and the Electricity and Water Authority.
“We urge everyone to comply with rules and regulations as we will continue with our partners to take measures to ensure safety, security and municipal adherence.”
He added under new regulations all landlords had to register their properties with the municipality.
“Also, new regulations include allocating space of 40 feet per worker with the number of people per room not exceeding eight, obligations which we are strictly concerned are fulfilled through our visits.
“It is our job to limit violations and we are working to ensure that all proper standards are met.”
